DRONE:KLUB:46
. Sanctuary Drone
An unofficial Nuit Blanche happening
A night of ambient drone experimentation
Saturday,
October 5, 2024 . 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Trinity-St.Paul's Centre .
427 Bloor St W.
FREE to attend or perform
DRONE:KLUB is a
live community drone series. Droners, Friends and Audience are all
welcome for our events, where community sound-weaving is explored.
On Nuit
Blanche 2024, DRONE:KLUB begins a night of exploratory and
drifty sounds in the beautiful Sanctuary of Trinity-St. Paul's (427
Bloor St. W. - near the Spadina Subway) from 8pm to 10pm, followed
by its sister-drone-series Cosmic Homeostasis and a Sunrise
Soundbath.
Come and hang out or participate with three different modes of sound
creation, merging into each other as the night evolves into morning.
Technical notes: There will be about a dozen mono or 6 stereo mixer
inputs so we may need to trade off if there are many Droners.
Please bring long
cables with 1/4" male jacks (or adapters to
1/4" male) to connect with the mixer. There will be AC power and
some power bars. 3 large tables will be available to be shared and
there's comfy chairs.
Load-in
/ Setup - 7pm to 8pm. The set will be from 8pm to 10pm. There "may" be
an overlap from 10pm to 11pm with Cosmic Homeostasis.
BTW - If you're
droning, bringing headphones (to hear your part of the ensemble drone
more clearly) & a tuner (if you're analog) would
be a plus.
We'll be recording for potential free album releases like these: https://droneklub.bandcamp.com

PM - Cosmic Homeostasis is an artistic collective that gathers
for the purpose of creating large-ensemble improvised drone-based music.
Mixing performers with diverse musical backgrounds and experience levels,
performances create space to develop improvisatory skills through listening
while constructing unique sonic environments.

AM - Spectrum Soundbath is a spontaneous and collaborative composition
exploring sound meditation.

PiNG 2014 11 25 with
URM + General Chaos Visuals
URM performs
ambient electronic soundscapes and sequencer
driven Berlin School electronics to the light painting projections
of
General Chaos Visuals live at THE
AMBiENT PiNG in Toronto's
Array Space.
All
music was generated in real time utilizing a virtual studio of
synthesizers, effect units and step sequencers. Light paintings
were also projected and created in real time utilizing hand
painted gels and analog projectors.
As
the show was captured with a single camera there's a lot
chaotic compositing of the Chaos Visuals and light paintings
which makes it a very psychedelic experience - like a
concert being held inside a lava lamp.

THE PiNG LiST
A
BRiEF HiSTORY OF THE PiNG!
THE
AMBiENT PiNG is a Toronto based creative community of
audio artists, performers, musicians and visual artists. The PiNG
presents live multimedia performances featuring ambient, electronic,
soundscape, chillout, trip hop, dream pop, downtempo, space,
darkwave, drone and experimental artists from around the world.
As
longtime PiNGers know, the PiNG has
had many homes for its
regular series AMBiENT PiNG TUESDAYS. Beginning in
1999 with
3 spots on Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market: Garvey's, Cafe
Vernon and Po Boys Club. None of these places
exist any more.
Some
of you have fond memories of our shows at Po Boys in
2000, but our next residence from 2001 - 2004 was a favourite
spot for many - Club Nia at C'est What! A
fabulous beer
selection, delicious food (many still miss their Shepherd's pie),
a quality stereo PA system and very cool staff, who
came to understand what we were about - especially
our fave bartender Andrea. What a shame that
they had to close that room.
Following
a warm home at Nia was a very cold fall/winter
at the Gladstone Hotel (as they were still early in
their
renovations and had not yet installed their heating system),
and then, for a year and a half (2005 - 2006), in the massive
mothership of a room, Tequila Lounge/Hacienda.
After 7
years of running AMBiENT PiNG TUESDAYS as
a
weekly series, the PiNG switched the format
in the summer
of 2006 and produced AMBiENT PiNG TUESDAYS as a
monthly event at the DRAKE
UNDERGROUND until
early in 2008.
June
of 2008 through July 2009 the PiNG alternated between
two
very comfortable arts-friendly clubs, The Renaissance Café and
The Central, for our regular monthly in-club series. Sadly
in May
2009, The Renaissance Café retired from the
local bar scene.
For
its Tenth Anniversary in August of 2009, THE
AMBiENT PiNG
returned to Augusta Avenue for a special celebration at Supermarket.
Performers booked included some of the first artists to play the PiNG
in 1999 and a first-ever live performance by a new collaborative
project – to represent the artistic cross-pollination often
inspired at the PiNG. The PiNG continued
with mostly-monthly shows
at Supermarket - a wonderful club with a superb sound
system,
video projector, delicious meals and quality micro-brews - for 5 years
until its Fifteenth Anniversary in August of 2014.
2014
also saw a number of PiNG concerts at the wonderful
Array Space in the Queen West area just south east of
Trinity Bellwoods park.
April
2015 through to July 2016, the PiNG's live mostly monthly live concert
series was hosted at Ratio, a wonderful intimate
artist space on the south side of College west of Spadina.
The PiNG celebrated
its 17th Anniversary at the Burdock Music
Hall in August 2016 before settling in back to where it
started in Toronto's Kensington Market at Handlebar in
September of 2016. Longtime PiNGers will remember that Handlebar is
in the same space as Southern Po Boys and the Po
Boys Club where the PiNG hosted many shows back in 2000
including dreamSTATE's first Drone
Cycle of 12 monthly shows covering the 12 note chromatic
scale. As looping is a big part of the music we present, it seems
only fitting that we are now looping our presentation spaces too
and are currently hosting the monthly PiNG concert series at Handlebar.
The PiNG also
presents random shows in alternative spaces such as
Tom Heasley & THE AMBiENT PiNG ORCHESTRA at
the Music Gallery
in 2001, ambient pioneer Robert Rich at Art
System Gallery in 2002, at
the Church of the Holy Trinity in 2006 & St.
George the Martyr Church (Music Gallery) in 2010.
Also in 2006, Troum at Le Labo & SONiC
TAPESTRiES featuring a wide variety of PiNG artists
at The Textile Museum of Canada for Nuit
Blanche 2006 and TEXTURE a special Sunday
afternoon concert at The Textile Museum in
September 2008 featuring a spectrum of artists.
In
the spring of 2010, the PiNG presented Toronto's
first week-long
Ambient Music Festival which featured ambient
legend Robert Rich.
In
2016 the PiNG launched DRONE:KLUB,
an ever evolving community of drone sound artists who gather and
perform together to expore drone music while sharing their technology
and techniques.
In
Dec. 2016, monthly DRONE:KLUB Gatherings started
at the Roland Inspiration Centre . 001-1179 King
Street W. Toronto (Liberty Village) underground at the S/W corner
of King St W and Fraser Ave (by Lamport Stadium). Droners, Friends
and Audience are all welcome for these FREE community drone immersion
experience so bring your instrument, wires & stand to join the
drone:meld.
In
August 2019, THE AMBiENT PiNG celebrated 20 years of live ambient
and drone events.

PiNG
AMBiENCE 3 is
the third CD in an ongoing series sponsored by
THE AMBiENT PiNG. The compilation
features tracks by thirteen unique
and talented guitar soundsculptors, most of whom have performed at
the PiNG.
PiNG
AMBiENCE 3 began as STRiNG THiNGS,
a personal project by Eric
Hopper of Sylken, to bring together onto
one CD the ambient guitarists
he has come to know and admire in recent times. It became apparent
that
releasing STRiNG THiNGS as PiNG AMBiENCE
3, a PiNG community project
would respond to the demand for more PiNG music and
provide a venue for
these guitar artists to weave their sonic webs.
Thirteen
diverse and intriguing soundscapes are offered by Toronto
guitarists Aidan Baker, Joe G (Styrohead), Eric
Hopper (Sylken),
Scott M2 (dreamSTATE), Phil
Ogison (TDITD), Matthew Poulakakis
(Solipsystem), Paul Royes (cybertarist), Arnold
Sprogis (Ambient TV);
by Terry O'Brien (Anomalous Disturbances,
Vancouver); and by our
friends from the USA, Matt Borghi (Portland OR), Michael
Diamond
(San Rafael CA), Mark Mahoney (The Amaranth
Signal, Knoxville TN)
and Stuart White (Diatonis, Los Angeles
CA).
Various
tracks were sculpted by using only guitar / looper / effect meldings,
while other tracks include synthesized sonics and effect treatments
in
concert with guitar. A palette of moods and textures are created where
the ambient guitar performs as the lead voice, evoking some wonderfully
vibrant and emotive atmospheres where the listener's imagination
can wander.
