Ambient music pioneer Robert Rich gives his second-ever
Toronto performance on April 29th, in a solo concert of
his distinctive instrumental electronic music -- playing
flutes and lap steel guitar, along with analog synthesizer,
keyboards and
computers.
Featuring selections
from his new CD
"Electric Ladder"
as well as forays
into earlier works
and improvisation,
his music will be
accompanied by
a film by artist
Daniel Colvin,
as well as custom
laser projections.
Since releasing his
first album in 1982,
Robert Rich has
released over two
dozen more, helping
to define the genres
of ambient music,
dark-ambient,
tribal and trance.
Rich uses home-made
acoustic and electronic instruments, microtonal tunings,
and computer-based signal processing to sculpt his unique
sonic environments, an approach dating back to 1976
when he built his first synthesizer, at the age of 13.
His all-night Sleep Concerts, performed in the 80s,
became legendary in the San Francisco area and
beyond. In 2001 he released the 7-hour audio DVD
" Somnium", a studio distillation of the Sleep Concert
experience, and possibly the longest continuous piece
of music ever released. His two collaborations with
Steve Roach, "Strata" (1990) and "Soma" (1992),
both charted for several months in Billboard.Robert Rich is without a doubt one of the most
fascinating electronic musicians of our time. This
rare Toronto appearance (in the beautiful setting
and great acoustics of the Church of the Holy
